Gen Z: The Sober Curious Generation

Generation Z is the first generation to be truly sober curious. In short, more and more of this generation doesn’t find drinking to be “cool” anymore. That’s after the previous generation, Millennials, were already turning down drinks more often than their predecessors in Gen X. A report published by Berenberg Research, found that Gen Z were drinking 20 percent less per capita than Millennials – who, in turn, drink less than Baby Boomers and Gen Xers did at the same age.

Born after 1996, not all of this generation is yet old enough to drink, but those that are Gen Z adults are more often becoming sober curious, meaning they are interested in reducing or eliminating alcohol consumption. Many are forgoing booze entirely too. A University of Michigan study found that 28 percent of college-age students are abstaining from alcohol completely.

There are a number of reasons why Gen Z is so sober curious and overall drinking less. One reason is that they are more aware of the negative health effects of alcohol than previous generations. They have grown up in a world where information is readily available, and they have seen firsthand the devastating impact that alcohol can have on people's lives. They are taking back control of their lives and making choices for themselves rather than following in their parents’ sometimes ill-fated footsteps.

Another reason why Gen Z is sober curious is that they are more aware of and focused on their mental health than previous generations. They are aware of the link between alcohol and mental health problems such as anxiety and depression, and they are choosing to prioritize their mental well-being. Being hungover does nothing positive for one’s mindset and this generation wants to accomplish a lot in their days. This isn’t possible with a low mood or less energy from alcohol intake the night before.

Finally, Gen Z is sober curious because they are more socially conscious than previous generations. They are aware of the environmental and social impact of alcohol production, and they are choosing to make more sustainable and ethical choices. Plus, they are the generation that is always aware of their image as with 24/7 screens and devices readily on or recording they want to have more control over their image and behavior, which is difficult when under the influence of alcohol.
